TOWN OF PINE KNOLL SHORES: Ugly Winter Weather Possible This Weekend

Winterweather

Town of Pine Knoll Shores issued the following announcement on Jan. 12.

Pls see the graphic below from the Nat'l Weather Service in Newport. It looks as though Sunday will present driving challenges for all of us, but particularly for those heading home after a weekend in PKS.

It is becoming more likely that a large storm system will impact the area Sunday into Monday. Most of the area may see a brief, light wintry mix of snow, sleet or freezing rain Sunday morning. The highest potential for this will be the farther inland you live and with ground temperatures quite cold leading up to the storm, icy spots are certainly possible.

Any wintry mix will quickly change over to all rain by Sunday afternoon and for the majority of the event, heavy rain, wind, and coastal flooding will likely be the highest impacts. With strong south winds quickly shifting into the southwest to west Sunday night into Monday, minor to moderate water level rises are possible across the Pamlico Sound, and adjacent rivers. In addition large waves will likely lead to ocean over wash and beach erosion into the day Monday.
