FOIA Request Sent to Dare County Election Department Regarding Upcoming Election Candidates on February 5, 2025

A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was sent to the Dare County Election Department in North Carolina regarding candidates running in the upcoming spring election. The request was made on February 5, 2025.

We at Outer Banks Times are committed to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs. As part of our ongoing efforts, we requested records under the North Carolina Public Records Law, G.S. §132-1., specifically seeking information about all candidates participating in the forthcoming election.

The requested details include each candidate's first, middle, and last name; the office they are running for; jurisdiction of the office; and their party affiliation. Additionally, we have asked for all available contact information for each candidate including their address, phone number, and email address.

As a media organization involved in gathering and reporting news to the public, access to public records is essential for us to fulfill our professional responsibilities. These responsibilities include holding public institutions accountable and providing transparency to the public. Given our role in disseminating information, we believe we are eligible for a fee waiver as a media professional.

Our goal is to ensure that our readers are well-informed about their local government affairs and have access to accurate information about their election candidates. We will continue to seek transparency from public institutions and hold them accountable for their actions.
