County of Currituck issued the following announcement on Dec. 23.

We’re expecting some seriously cold weather over the next couple of days with wind chills as low as -5°F. These freezing temperatures will last throughout the weekend and into next week.

Cold weather can be life threatening.

If you can’t avoid being outside, remember to follow these 3 steps and tell someone where you’re going. Weather.gov/cold #WitnerSafety

-Dress in layers.

-Prepare a safety kit for your car in case you get stuck in the cold.

 -Limit time outside.

Some tips to prepare your home for the cold weather

-Safely prepare water pipes to prevent them from freezing.

-NEVER use a generator inside a home, shed or garage, even if doors and windows are open.

-Ensure your pets have shelter away from the cold as well as food and water.
