County of Hyde issued the following announcement on Sept. 26.
Hyde County Government offices will be closed Friday, September 30, 2022, due to the impending weather from Tropical Storm Ian. The National Weather Service has issued a Tropical Storm Warning and a Storm Surge Watch for our area.
The latest briefing from NWS Morehead City is to expect a prolonged period of strong northeast winds, 25-35 mph with gusts up to 50 mph, Thursday through Saturday morning. A few tornados may be possible through Friday. Storm surges of 2-4 feet are possible in surge-prone areas in addition to rainfall totals of 4-6 inches.
The potential for flash flooding is elevated. Sound route ferries between Ocracoke, Swan Quarter, and Cedar Island have been suspended. The Hatteras - Ocracoke ferry is currently running a limited schedule due to wind.
However, as the weather worsens, they may also suspend service on that route. You can call ahead at 252-996-6000 to see if that ferry is running. NC Hwy 12 is currently open and accessible, with crews on standby to clear sand.
Please drive carefully and reduce your speed! The next high tide will be around 10:30 pm tonight. Now is the time to finish any preparations needed. Check your hurricane preparedness kits. Anything that is missing should be restocked, including prescription medicine. Don’t forget about your pets!
