County of Currituck issued the following announcement on July 25.
The Tourism Department is seeking public input for a proposed monument or statue commemorating the life of John Jasper White, known as "Currituck Jack".
He was an enslaved sailor during the Revolutionary War period.
Three community meetings will be held to tell the story of Currituck Jack and gather ideas for the artwork from citizens.
