Town of Pine Knoll Shores issued the following announcement on June 30.
With Independence Day coming up on Monday, I wanted to remind everyone of our state law concerning the possession and use of fireworks. As you can imagine, our officers receive quite a few calls regarding fireworks on and around Independence Day. If the firework leaves the ground and explodes, it is considered illegal in North Carolina and a violation of General Statute 14-410. A good rule of thumb is that if you bought the fireworks out of state and brought them to North Carolina, there is a good chance they are illegal in North Carolina.
A violation of North Carolina General Statute 14-410, Possession of a Pyrotechnic, is a misdemeanor and a mandatory court appearance. We have had issues in the past with property damage, littering, fires being started, and some near injuries as a result of the use of illegal fireworks. Please don’t put our officers in a position to potentially charge someone with a fairly serious offense such as this.
Alcohol and fireworks, no matter how harmless they may seem, never mix and increase the risk of injury to yourself and others around you exponentially. I hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable Independence Day!
