COUNTY OF CARTERET: Public Library System Returning to In-person Summer Reading Programs

Summerreadingprogram

County of Carteret issued the following announcement on June 28.

After two years of hosting online and hybrid reading programs because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Carteret County in-person summer reading programs are making a comeback.

The Carteret County Public Library System is launching its annual summer reading program with the theme, “Oceans of Possibilities,” on June 13. Generously supported by the Friends of the Library groups, this year’s marine-themed program will inspire readers of all ages to dive into the ocean depths this summer with programs, story times, book clubs, prize drawings and more.

“We’re excited to return to a more normal-paced Summer Reading Program this year,” said Director of Carteret County Public Libraries Jeanne Holmgren. “The summer reading program merges education and fun into a marine-themed program to explore our environment beyond a trip to the beach to play in the sand. We will learn about ocean life, animals, and the wonderful ways we can work to sustain our natural resources.”

The goal of the annual summer reading program is to nurture and grow a lifelong love of reading and learning. Programs and events are organized by age levels for kids, teens, and adults. Participants enrolled in the program receive a summer reading log sheet to keep track of progress. Children and teens will be entered into the Carteret County Public Library’s Grand Prize drawing at the end of the summer. The more participants read and the more reading log sheets they complete, the more chances they’ll have to win!

Adults can report their participation on a summer reading log sheet. Once completed, the log sheet can be entered into the Grand Prize drawing at each of the five library branches. This year, adults 18 and up can win a Kindle Fire.

The Summer Reading Program will also feature programming from organizations such as the N.C. Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores, Coastal Environmental Partnership, N.C. Coastal Federation, Center for Marine Sciences and Technology, Outer Banks Wildlife Shelter, University of North Carolina Wilmington MarineQuest, and Titanic Historian, Dr. Melinda Ratchford.

“The 2022 Summer Reading Program is made possible by the generous support of the Friends of the Library,” added Holmgren. “Special thanks go out to them for providing the funding for all of the prizes and supporting our mission to literacy.”
