County of Currituck issued the following announcement on Mar. 18.

The annual household hazardous waste collection has grown into a larger event that will also include free document shredding for county residents. On Saturday, April 2, Currituck County will host the first annual Environment Day Fair.

Two sites will be available for county residents to dispose of household hazardous wastes:

  • Currituck Judicial Center, 2801 Caratoke Hwy., Currituck, 10:00 am – 2:00 pm
  • Southern OBX Water Plant, 734 Ocean Trail, Corolla, 10:00 am – 12:00 pm
Free document shredding will be available at the Currituck Judicial Center from 10:00 am – 1:00 pm. This additional service is sponsored by the Local Government Federal Credit Union.

The NC Cooperative Extension staff in Currituck County will provide demonstrations of environmentally friendly practices for citizens at the Judicial Center.  At both sites, the Extension staff will hand out free informational packets.

In addition, food trucks will be at both sites for citizens to purchase refreshments. All participants may also enter a free raffle for a chance to win a backyard composter.

Examples of accepted household hazardous wastes include:  aerosols, antifreeze, household batteries, fire extinguishers, propane tanks, alkaline and acidic cleaners, pool chemicals, fertilizers, pesticides, insecticides, caulk, mercury, thermostats, florescent light bulbs, adhesives, wood filler, paint thinner, and oil-based paints.

Unacceptable wastes include:  latex paint, commercial wastes, explosives, ammunition, radioactive material, smoke detectors, prescription drugs, asbestos, biohazardous wastes, syringes, and needles. The contractor collecting the materials, EcoFlo, Inc., reserves the right to refuse any waste deemed unsafe to handle or unsuitable for the collection.
