North Carolina House Speaker Tim Moore (R-Cleveland) visited Ocracoke with Rep. Ed Goodwin (R-Edenton) to receive updates about ferry operations and needs, while also inspecting the damage Hurricane Isaias caused, the North Carolina Republican House Caucus said.
At Goodwin's and Rep. Bobby Hanig's (R-Rowells Point) request, Moore supported funding for the passenger ferry service.
"At their request, I found the funding to support this year's operation," Moore said, the Island Free Press reported on Aug. 17.
The House speaker secured $1 million in funding for the ferry, which also lets the ship stop at the historic lighthouse as part of a tour.
While in Ocracoke, Moore also visited the United Methodist Church, which was damaged by Hurricane Dorian and needed repairs.
"We know Ocracoke has had a lot of challenges and we want to come here to let folks know (that) even though this is a far-flung part of North Carolina, it's not at all forgotten," Moore said, the Island Free Press reported.
