Senate Republicans hope to pass partial budget bill

Republican lawmakers are pushing for a partial spending bill after Gov. Roy Cooper vetoed a budget in June due to a dispute over a Medicaid expansion.

The Senate is looking to push through partial budget bills after the main budget bill was vetoed by the governor over the summer.

The House voted to override Cooper's veto in September. The Senate still must vote, with three-fifths required to override the veto.

When the bill passed the Senate in June, it passed 33-15, according to The Center Square. Cooper vetoed it the next day.

The Senate is likely to adjourn by Oct. 31 and must give 24 hours' notice before it votes to override the bill, the news agency reported.

Senate Majority Leader Phil Berger, R-Rockingham, told The Center Square he would prefer to negotiate a compromise with Senate Democrats because of the governor's refusal to pass the budget without Medicaid expansion.
