NAGS HEAD, N.C. — Ronald A. Sloan, known as Ronnie to colleagues and the Outer Banks community, has announced his retirement from Outer Banks Health at the end of this year. His departure marks the end of a 40-year career in healthcare leadership, including 14 years with Outer Banks Health.
Under Sloan’s leadership, healthcare access on the Outer Banks expanded significantly. The transformation of a small critical access hospital into a comprehensive community hospital network was achieved during his tenure. Notable achievements include reduced mortality rates from stroke and cancer in Dare County and fostering a culture of compassion among staff and patients.
In recognition of his efforts, Sloan received the Rural Health Leadership Award from The American Hospital Association in 2018 for guiding transformational change and improving health access.
“Ronnie has provided a generous notice that gives us time to identify the next leader and ensure a smooth and seamless transition,” said D. Van Smith, President of ECU Health Community Hospitals and former president of The Outer Banks Hospital. “We also have time to plan a retirement celebration where we can come together as a community.”
The selection process for Sloan’s successor will be led by Van Smith alongside Reese Jackson, President and CEO of Chesapeake Regional Healthcare.
Outer Banks Health is known for its patient satisfaction and pioneering rural health programs. It serves both residents and visitors with an extensive range of services tailored to its coastal community.
