Permanent traffic changes to S. 8th Street in Morehead City will begin on May 13, according to a May 12 announcement from the city. The changes include making the entire street one way heading northbound toward Arendell Street/Highway 70.

The adjustments are part of an ongoing project aimed at improving traffic flow and safety along S. 8th Street. The city said the work is expected to last two to three days, during which the 100 block of S. 8th Street—from Arendell Street/Highway 70 to Evans Street—will be closed for roadwork.

This marks the second phase of the project, following a change implemented in January that made the street’s 200 block by the Morehead City Public Library one-way northbound as well. Additionally, new signage from the North Carolina Department of Transportation will indicate that right turns from Arendell Street/Highway 70 onto S. 8th Street are no longer permitted.

Once construction is complete, all of S. 8th Street will allow only northbound traffic toward Highway 70, with updates visible through new signs and a graphic provided by city officials showing adjusted patterns and closures.

The current work follows an April City Council decision approving one-way designations for portions of Shepard Street and all of S. 8th Street, as well as renaming parking lots for easier reference—a move documented in meeting minutes available at moreheadcitync.gov.
