Inflation will impact Halloween candy sales in 2023, 40% of adults say

In the United States, consumers are confronting a significant rise in candy prices for the second consecutive year. According to Datasembly, a retail price monitoring service, candy and gum prices have surged by an average of 13% this month compared to Oct. of the previous year, more than twice the 6% uptick observed in overall grocery prices.

“Bidenomics is putting the “trick” in “trick-or-treat” as 40% of adults say inflation will impact how much Halloween candy they purchase this year”, according to CBS.

A survey conducted by Advantage Solutions, a sales and marketing group involving over a thousand adults revealed that 40% believe inflation may affect their candy purchases. “Nine out of ten grocery shoppers will purchase Halloween candy, with nearly three-quarters of them venturing into stores in the final two weeks of October in search of their favorite treats at perceived value. Keeping these products readily available on the shelves and in displays is of utmost importance for candy brands and retailers, especially in the lead-up to Halloween when shoppers are most active”, said Andy Keenan, Executive Vice President of Retail Services at Advantage Solutions.

The discount grocer Aldi has promoted a 250-piece assortment of Mars Inc. chocolate bars, including Milky Way, Twix, and Snickers for $24.98 whereas two years ago it was priced at $19.54 according to Fortune article. Hershey Co., which has consistently increased its prices by 7% or more each quarter for seven quarters straight has noted higher prices are impacting demand resulting in North American confectionery sales volumes declining by 1% during Jul.-Sept.. Michele Buck, President and CEO of Hershey Co., stressed that they recognize consumers prioritize value and affordability given stretched budgets and they’re actively striving to offer products at different price points and pack sizes at value stores.

Super Market News reported almost 90% survey participants are planning to purchase candy, around 60% are expected to acquire decorations and costumes with a staggering 72% of those with children opting for costumes. Around 30% will buy food treats other than candy. Among the Halloween candy buyers, over half are prepared to spend over $25 on sweets this year with a fifth allocating more than $50 for this purpose. As for those buying other Halloween-themed edible treats, nearly 60% plan on spending over $25 and a quarter expect to exceed $50 in expenditure.
