County of Carteret issued the following announcement on Jan. 30.

Today we remember Beaufort native, Capt. Michael John Smith U.S. Navy, and the six other astronauts who were killed 37 years ago when the Space Shuttle Challenger exploded just 73 seconds after take off.

“Sometimes, when we reach for the stars, we fall short. But we must pick ourselves up again and press on despite the pain.”— President Ronald Reagan after the disaster.
