The Carteret County Health Department will hold a free community training session on March 5 to discuss the link between diabetes management and immunizations. The event is scheduled from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the ABC Conference Room at the health department, located at 3820 Bridges St., Suite A in Morehead City.
Diabetes continues to be a significant public health concern, contributing to disease and mortality rates both locally and globally. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that about 40 million Americans have diabetes, with roughly 11 million cases undiagnosed. Chronic illnesses like diabetes can weaken the immune system, increasing vulnerability to other diseases.
A diabetes program coordinator from the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services will lead the session. Participants will learn about how vaccinations can improve health outcomes for people living with diabetes by reducing risks of severe illness, complications, and hospitalization.
The training will cover several topics:
– How diabetes affects immune system function.
– Guidance on which vaccines are recommended based on individual health profiles.
– Data on vaccine safety and effectiveness, along with answers to common questions.
