The Carteret County Area Transportation Board will hold a meeting at 9 a.m. on May 21 in the Conference Room at the General Services Building, located at 5231 Business Drive, Newport, North Carolina.
The meeting is part of ongoing efforts to address transportation issues affecting residents and stakeholders in Carteret County. The agenda for the session was announced ahead of time, inviting interested parties to attend and participate.
Education outcomes remain an important topic within the county. Of 554 senior students taking the science portion of the ACT in Carteret County school districts, 202 (36.5%) were considered ready for college in the 2022-23 school year; among juniors, out of 563 students taking science, 216 (38.4%) met college readiness standards according to the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction. In reading, data show that among seniors taking this section of the ACT, 263 out of 554 (47.5%) were deemed college-ready while among juniors it was higher: out of 563 students tested, 287 (51%) reached college readiness benchmarks as reported by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.
Math scores indicate that out of all senior students tested (554), only 190 (34.3%) achieved scores indicating college readiness; for juniors tested (563), just over one-third—200 students or about 35.5%—were considered ready for college-level math work according to the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.
Meetings such as this provide an opportunity for local officials and community members to discuss these types of statistics and consider how transportation planning may impact access to educational resources or other services.
