Carteret County announced on May 6 that the proposed budget for the fiscal year 2026–2027 will be submitted to the Board of County Commissioners on Monday, May 11. The announcement states that a copy of the proposed budget will be available for public inspection in the Clerk’s Office at 210 Turner Street, Beaufort, North Carolina, and online starting May 11. Citizens can view a printed copy by appointment by contacting the Clerk to the Board at 252-360-4164.

A public hearing regarding the proposed budget is scheduled for May 18 at 6:00 p.m., during the regular meeting of the Board of County Commissioners. The meeting will take place in the Board Room located at 302 Courthouse Square, Beaufort, North Carolina. “All interested citizens are invited to attend and be heard,” said Nick Wilson, Clerk to the Board.

The annual budget process provides an opportunity for residents to review and comment on county spending priorities and allocations before final adoption. Public input during these hearings can influence funding decisions related to services such as education, infrastructure, and community programs.

Recent educational data shows that in Carteret County school districts during the 2022-23 school year, between about one-third and one-half of junior and senior students taking ACT subject tests were considered ready for college in reading, math, or science subjects according to North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.

The upcoming hearing allows residents not only to learn more about how local funds may support schools but also other key areas affecting daily life in Carteret County.
